SUSTAINABILITY IS THE ONLY CONSTANT
As responsible citizens, an interior designer’s job is not only to design the space aesthetically but also to examine its relationship with the environment. In design enterprise, the fastest growing and everlasting trend is going to be the incorporation of sustainability in design. Sustainable design is a practice wherein material selection and production is commenced, keeping in mind the affects it should cause to our environment. Lately, a lot of practices have been explored to implement sustainability in architecture and interior design.
HOW CAN WE IMPLEMENT A SUSTAINABLE INTERIOR DESIGN?
The practice starts with maximum utilization of space and resources to achieve a desired intention. The more effectively is a space utilized, the lesser is the need to build and hence the exploitation. Spaces have to be planned in a way that wisely balances the aesthetics and functionality with choices that reduce the design’s impact on the environment. A considerable shift towards refurbishing old furniture, recycling, up-cycling and a comeback of the vintage era, all of it, is a consequence of the same.
- Select a wise design: Minimalism is not only the most trending interior style that most of the people follow today but also the need of the hour. Implementing minimal interior design does not only make your space look sophisticated and rich but also contributes to sustainability by minimizing the use of materials and resources.
- Say no to Wastage: Discarding is no longer an option. Put your creative skills to work and implement ways to reclaim, reuse and refurbish old furniture. Some common skills include re-paint, distress and gold foil texture. This not only enhances the beauty of the piece but also adds a character to your space.
- Go green: Executing a green design makes a space more welcoming in an environment friendly manner in addition to beautifying it. Plants like spider plant, snake plant, bamboo palm, aloe vera act as air purifiers for a space, which is a major remedy for the increasing global pollution levels.
- Use of energy efficient technology: With advancement in technology, a lot of energy efficient methods have been devised for decreasing the consumption of electricity. Automated sensor driven lighting solutions, bath solutions, introduction of LEDs all contribute to saving and sustainability at a large level.
Designs that promote the use of organic materials, minimize the exploitation of nature, emit minimum harmful substances on usage and are long lasting, contribute to a sustainable design environment. The major challenge in materializing a sustainable design is the achievement of aesthetics. Implementing the methods discussed as above will keep you in pace with the everlasting trends in addition to decorating your space aesthetically.
Keep working and never forget, history is always in the making.
